CLEP Test Formats
There are two types of CLEP, Computer Based Test (CBT) and Paper-Pencil Based Test.
CLEP test covers courses that students need to take during the first two years of college education. Each CLEP test covers the material in one semester course unless otherwise stated. Therefore, the number of credits you can earn through a CLEP exam is the same as if you completed that course with a satisfactory grade.
Each exam is 90 minutes and except for English composition and essay, questions are mostly multiple-choice with some fill-in the blanks. Note that points will not be deducted for incorrect and unanswered questions therefore try to answer all the questions in the best of your knowledge. However, because each school has its own policy, they reserve the right to change the format for the test. This means schools make decision on which areas you can take a CLEP test (e.g. Math Vs. chemistry), and the amount of credits you can earn through CLEP tests. For example, University of Maryland accepts the CLEP exams only in Natural science, Humanities, Social Studies, History, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Government, Math, and Sociology. Furthermore, these credits are considered as transferred credits (for more information go to University of Maryland Web Site). For other universities this information can be found under these titles; Credit by examination, advance standing, advance placement, external degree program. You can contact administration or registration office of your desired college/university for the rules governing CLEP in that school.
